SAN MATEO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
COMMUNICATIONS UNIT
In November 2006, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office took delivery of two brand-new Mobile Communication Units (MCUs). Both vehicles were made possible through grant funding provided by the Department of Homeland Security. The vehicles are operated and maintained by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Communications Unit. Each vehicle serves as a small field command post and communication hub, providing an incident with satellite-based internet, a wireless hotspot, a portable satellite phone, office space, and two-way radio communications (Public Safety, Amateur Radio, Aviation, & Maine Bands). Both vehicles are available for use by any public safety agency in the region, but only one vehicle can leave the county at a time.
